Russian Flagship students can complete their Pre-Capstone study abroad requirement by studying at an intensive Russian program other than RLASP or UGA-Riga, however Flagship student support may not be used to support these programs. Below is a list of scholarships that are available to help fund such programs.
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in support of students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Summer FLAS awards include a $3,500 stipend plus a tuition award for the cost of language program (up to $5,000).

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
Deadline: November
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program, administered by the U.S. Department of State, is a fully funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens. Students of Russian must be at the intermediate or advanced level of proficiency to be accepted into the program. Russian Flagship students applying for CLS should set up a meeting with IU Office of National Scholarships and Awards.
Critical Language Scholarship
Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
Deadline: October and March
The Gilman scholarship provides study abroad awards to undergraduate students who receive Federal Pell Grants. The average award amount is $4,000. Students who receive a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program if they are studying a critical language such as Russian.

American Councils (AC) Scholarships for RLASP
Deadline: When Program Application is Due
The AC Study Abroad Scholarship Fund is intended to provide additional financial support for students to study abroad. All applicants to American Council’s summer programs are eligible for partial scholarship awards from this fund.

Hamilton Lugar Study Abroad Scholarships
Deadline: March
The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies offers scholarships to support undergraduate students participating in an overseas study experience. Russian Flagship students who have a major or minor in HLS are eligible to apply. The overseas study program can be for a summer, a semester, or an academic year.
