Once students reach level 2+ proficiency at IU they are ready to take their language skills overseas to spend an academic year at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty Kazakhstan. The Capstone Year in Kazakhstan is operated by American Councils for International Education.
Students enroll for the Capstone Year abroad through the IU Office of Overseas Study.
Applications to the Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone Program are due in mid-January for the following academic year. Students must plan far in advance to apply for the program and to meet the proficiency (the minimum of 2+ oral abilities and 1+ in two other skills) and study abroad eligibility requirements (pre-capstone study abroad for at least 8 weeks in an intensive Russian language program at the secondary level with a homestay).
Outstanding Russian Flagship students who consistently demonstrate satisfactory progress will be eligible for Flagship scholarships to support their Capstone Year training. Students who wish to be considered for Flagship scholarships are strongly encouraged to apply for other scholarships, grants, and funding sources.
